What’s the trickiest thing about working in law?

Achieving a work-life balance with clients that want, and expect, 24/7 service and instant responses.

Who taught you the best lesson on your early career?

Simon Olswang, who taught me to challenge conventional thinking and to consider everything with an open mind.

What lesson did you learn the hard way?

Not to think that any job was beneath me.

What inspires you to keep on keeping on?

The enthusiasm and energy of younger people who have a can-do attitude.

What’s the best way to survive an all-nighter?

Humour, and a sense of the ridiculous.

How do you de-stress?

With some music, such as Cafe del Mar.

You’ve had a long week. Which four people from history would you like to relax with over a drink?

Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Albert Einstein, John Lennon and Sir Francis Drake.

And finally, what’s your single best tip for people new to the profession?

Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Mark Devereux is the founding member, and Senior Partner, of Olswang.
